During most of my conversations with people opposed to energy, I find that the main reason is primarily fear of accidents and misconceptions about safety. While nuclear reactors still have meltdown risks, this is estimated at around 1 in 100,000 years or less for modern designs.

Nuclear waste storage is an issue, but in terms of the amount of nuclear waste and how safely it's stored, things are a lot better than people think.

In terms of deaths per terawatt-hour, nuclear energy is one of the safest. Even wind kills slightly more people per tWh than nuclear(ourworldindata.org/grapher/dea)

Been reading a lot about quantum-safe encryption recently, and I can't seem to understand how Shor's algorithm can theoretically break RSA. More specifically, what about quantum computing makes it easier to factor large primes? If its the superposition of the qubits, how can you obtain results when measuring the superposition will only give you information about one of many states?

having Perplexity and Wikipedia on my phone available at any time is kinda wild tbh, I think of a question about Japanese sword making and 10 minutes later I've learnt that some birds and other animals can see in UV, memorized the Krebs cycle and found out that Sartre actively defended pedophilia

Hello everyone, I'm Zenith.

I've been an advocate for open source and decentralized software for a while now, and finally decided to make the jump to Mastodon.

I find learning about new things incredibly rewarding and some of the things I currently nerd out about are , , , , , , and

I love having conversations with people about topics they're passionate about, and I'm excited to be here.
