There's hope in her books. The characters find places that feel good to them and that are a home.
Plus, I absolutely love the gender and sexuality representation in her books. So positive and easy-going and interesting. Lots of love.
In short, #cozy #sciencefiction? ๐

"[...] You're an animal, Sibling Dex. You are not seperate or other. You're an animal. And animals have no purpose. Nothing has a purpose. The world simply is. If you want to do things that are meaningful to others, fine! Good! So do I! [...]
You keep asking why your work is not enough, and I don't know how to answer that, because it is enough to exist in the world and marvel at it. You don't need to justify that, or earn it."

What could a world look like in which #ClimateCrisis was mastered? In which people live peacefully on a half-wild earth? In which AI chose to forge its own path, apart from humans?

Such a wonderfully hopeful read.
Starring a tea monk, an e-bike camper van, and talking about our purpose in life with a robot. Doesn't that sound great? It is. Feel-good read with depth.
The quote continues, by the way, a bit later:
"[Future generations] may hold artists and writers to be equally culpable - for the imagining of possibilities is not, after all, the job of politicians and bureaucrats."

"Climate change is often described as a "wicked problem". One of its wickedest aspects is that it may require us to abandon some of our most treasured ideas about political virtue: for example, "be the change you want to see."
What we need instead is to find a way out of the individualizing imaginary in which we are trapped."

Some subjective thoughts:
- I had never before thought about the irony of Bengali salesmen coming to Venice. I'd never put it together.
- The modern novel as a moral journey of a solitary hero may just be the convention that #solarpunk is reforming. #hopepunk as well?
answers to teaser questions, summary of book
- #Climatechange events are too catastrophic to be handled believably in a plot. They violate the reader's suspension of disbelief.
- We think we have subdued nature. Nature as a potentially scary, chaotic influence on a plot feels out of date, unmodern.
- A modern novel is a #moral journey. If we treat climate change as a moral journey, we will get lost in weird tangents (e.g.: Is someone 100% vegan or is there cheese on that sandwich?).

Amitav Ghosh - The Great Derangement
Why isn't today's primary literary genre #climatefiction? What about climate change makes it so unwieldy for plots?
What are the characteristics of the modern novel and why don't they jibe with climate change?

I'm not looking away out of fear anymore. I'm reading and learning. I think about what I can do. And now?
* I think fossil fuel consumption is not the only problem we have to solve.
* I think I can be a positive influence on the people around me.
* I can inspire small, but important change. I have my small power to influence our cultural norms.
Very subjective thoughts:
This book changed my life, no hyperbole. Brought home by my omnivore partner, it has turned both of us into (fledgling) vegans and sent me down a rabbit-hole of learning and exploration. This learning and exploration is what I will talk about on this account.
Like many people, I was convinced that climate change was real. I was also convinced that I couldn't do much about it. My actions wouldn't matter much. I felt weak and powerless.

I like that Foer is not perfect. I'm not perfect. Our goals are aligned: Achieve a #climatefriendly society. How can we get closer to our goals? We learn together in this book. We're on a path, a journey, everyone can become better and help.
There's a relationship between how I feel when I read accounts of the third reich in Germany and how I feel today in regard to the #climatecrisis.

#Livestock farming is a main driver of #climatechange. We often ignore this fact, because it is (emotionally) threatening - so much of our culture is related to food, and that food is often meat. E.g. #thanksgiving.

Jonathan Safran Foer - We are the Weather
In German, this book is called "We are the Climate".
Who are the main drivers of #climatechange? Do we need individual lifestyle adaptations? What can we do?
Everyone knows about the #climatecrisis, but most people don't act. Why? It's a problem of narrative and emotions. There's a difference between knowing rationally and feeling emotionally. Climate change is hard for us to believe and feel emotionally.
