Made some color icons today for my (somehow still unfinished) design tool. Not quite sure if I should use these or just plain SF Symbols.

Haven’t had much time to play around with it, but the Playbit os/dev environment from @rsms seems really fun!

The thing is, since it’s treated like music, you can assign metadata and thumbnails. When you click on the file, it just opens in Preview....

The thing is, since it’s treated like music, you can assign metadata and thumbnails. When you click on the file, it just opens in Preview. Why not collect your research papers right alongside some Lana Del Rey music? 🤪

Fun fact: You can import and manage PDFs in the Music app (formerly iTunes) on the Mac

It’s also worth mentioning that most of the new iPadOS stuff isn’t documented well, if at all. Not rarely do I have to spend an entire day to figure out how to implement simple features the way Apple does it. There’s also way too many occasions when customization options that AppKit has supported forever don’t exist or are private API on iOS.

This happens all the time on iPadOS btw, and is a huge problem. I spent the last days updating a creative app that hadn’t been updated for two release cycles, just fixing basic things. Tabbars, toolbars, sidebars and the document APIs keep changing and for apps which are mainly used on the iPhone, fixing stuff every release is hardly worth it. And that’s not even mentioning that some new APIs – such as the new UIDocumentViewController architecture – are super weird.

The tinted app icons in the new iOS seem to work way better on abstract symbols. Many of the more complex icons like maps (or the one in the screenshot in the bottom right) look … questionable.

I have to admit, I really like the feature in general though. Generally I have my phone in grayscale but this a less radical way to remove some distractions.
