Masculine (nominative), Feminine (dative / genitive), or plural (genitive).

If you see Der Apfel (masculine noun!) you know it's nominative. If you see Der Frau (feminine noun!) you know it's genitive or dative.

This is, frankly, not the easiest part of the language to learn :D German went wild and reused the same articles for different cases.

Word order doesn't really matter as much so you can say "The man eats an apple" or "An apple eats the man".

And it means the same thing because instead of "an" you have "einen" which is in the accusative case so means the apple is the direct object. And instead of "the" you have "der".

And der could mean a number of things because German, but it has to agree with Mann which is masculine so means nominative case (subject)
